Coming Together in the Fight against COVID-19 International Partners Send Messages of Sympathy to BUU

The outbreak of COVID-19 in China has tugged at the heartstrings of people around the world. Recently, more than 20 partner institutions from different countries and regions have sent emails and videos to BUU to express their solicitude for the faculty and students of the university in the fight against COVID-19. They are fully supportive of China’s efforts in the epidemic prevention and control and are confident that China will contain the epidemic soon.


We Are All together: “We believe China will win the battle against the virus!”

Thomas Rabe, Chairman of the John Rabe Communication Centre in Heidelberg, Germany, winner of the Friendship Award by the Chinese Government, and a guest professor at BUU, wrote to HAN Xianzhou, Secretary of the CPC Committee of BUU, and sent a video message to express his regards for the university. He noted that the Chinese government has taken effective measures to prevent the epidemic and has taken the lead in making the best efforts for the health and safety of mankind, so that the epidemic has been effectively contained. He also paid close attention to the new semester at BUU. When he learned that the university had started the new semester with video teaching, he was impressed by the University and extended his heartfelt greetings to the faculty and students of BUU.

Thomas Rabe is the grandson of John Rabe, author of The Diaries of John Rabe, and President of the German Society for Gynecological Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine. President Xi Jinping once said, “The Chinese people pay tribute to John Rabe because he was philanthropic and had a quest for world peace." In honour of his grandfather’s great humanitarian contribution, Thomas Rabe founded the “John Rabe Communication Centre” in Heidelberg. In 2018, Thomas Rabe was awarded the “Friendship Award by the Chinese Government”. In 2019, “The Beijing John Rabe Centre for Communication” was inaugurated at BUU. The Centre is a comprehensive research institution that encompasses teaching, research, and social services.


Alexander G. Galkin, Rector of the Ural State University of Railway Transport, Russia, sent a letter to BUU President Li Xuewei, saying, “China is our old friend and reliable partner! We are saddened by the loss of our Chinese friends and hope that those infected will recover quickly! We are confident that, under the firm guidance of the Chinese government, China will succeed in stabilising the situation against the epidemic in the shortest time possible!”

Igor Iliynski, the Rector of the Russian State University for the Humanities (Moscow) sent a letter to express his sincere sympathy and support to the staff and students of BUU. He believes that with the strong measures taken by China, the COVID-19 outbreak will soon be contained.

Vladimir Glazkov, Vice-Rector of the Russian University of Transport (RUT), sent a letter of sympathy to BUU, saying, “I believe that the Chinese people are fully capable of coping with the COVID-19 outbreak and their normal lives will certainly be fully restored. We are confident that the joint college of the two universities will have a success.”

B.B. Idrisova, Vice-Rector of the Russian Foreign Trade Academy, sent a letter of sympathy to express her respect to the Chinese people for their professional and selfless approach in fighting against the COVID-19 epidemic, as well as her expectation for the long-term development of economic and trade relations between Russia and China.

Vukotić, Rector of the University Donja Gorica (UDG), sent a letter of sympathy, saying, “We are confident that the Chinese government and the Chinese people will tackle this outbreak effectively; our hearts and hopes are with you and we support you!” He noted that the disaster has only made the friendship between the two countries deeper. BUU and the UDG collaborated to run the Tourism Confucius Classroom at UDG (independent) at the end of 2019.

Grzegorz Przebinda, Rector of the State Higher Vocational School in Krosno, Poland, sent a letter of sympathy to the staff and students of BUU, expressing his admiration for the strong measures taken by the Chinese people in response to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Standing by each other to tide over the difficulties together: “Let’s support each other in tough times. We look forward to meeting you again in Beijing.”

Aichi Bunkyo University and Niigata University in Japan sent their messages of sympathy to BUU respectively. In his video and letter, Takehiro Tomida, President of Aichi Bunkyo University, said, “Winter is the time when plum blossoms are in bloom. May all the staff and faculty members of BUU brave the “cold winter” like the plum blossoms; let us work together to fight against the epidemic, so that the friendship between the two universities will be firmer and cooperation will be closer.”

Professor Yuneo Cho of Niigata University, Japan, recorded a video with two junior students from the College of Tourism of BUU, who are studying at Niigata University, in which he said, "The Chinese people will definitely get back on their feet. We will support each other, and our friendship will be stronger. We look forward to meeting you in Beijing after we overcome the epidemic."

Kim Dong-Eun, Vice President of Foreign Affairs of Konkuk University, Pak Joon-Hoon, President of Korea National University of Transportation, Ren Hong-Jae, President of Kookmin University, and Professor Kim Hee-Yeon of University of Seoul sent videos or letters of sympathy to BUU, expressing their willingness to fight together with the students and teachers of BUU to overcome the difficulties.

Best wishes: “May the epidemic over and the good days back soon.”

Professor Medwin Hughes, President of University of Wales Trinity Saint David, UK, sent a letter to BUU’s Party Secretary Han Xianzhou and President Li Xuewei to express his sincere regards to our staff and students and his support for China's efforts to fight against the COVID-19 epidemic. He said: “Over the past 13 years, our two universities have worked together to strengthen the cultural exchange between China and Wales. We send this letter to express our support to your University during this difficult period of the epidemic outbreak. The care and support you have shown to your international students during the outbreak, and in particular to one of our exchange students at your university, has been admirable. Please be assured that we will stand shoulder to shoulder with BUU and the Chinese people through this difficult time.”

University of Wales Trinity Saint David, UK sent a video in which its President, Professor Medwin Hughes, expressed his regards to the students and staff of BUU and said, “we are family”. President Hughes also sent his greetings to Wuhan and China. He donated £6,000 and the entire leadership of University of Wales Trinity Saint David donated £20,000 to support Wuhan. BUU established the Confucius Institute with the university in 2007. In the video, students from the Confucius Institute at University of Wales Trinity Saint David sent their best wishes to support Wuhan and China in different forms.

The University of Huddersfield sent a letter of sympathy, in which the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan, expressed his deepest sympathy and solidarity with the staff and students of BUU and all the Chinese people. He said, “The University of Huddersfield strongly appreciates and supports the tremendous efforts made by the Chinese government to fight against the epidemic, and we will do our best to support China with international resources.” He was confident that with both parties working together, the final victory would be soon achieved.

Professor Mustafa Kibar, Rector of Çekurova University in Turkey, sent a letter of sympathy to extend his sincere regards to the staff and students of BUU. He said that with the effective response by the Chinese government, China would be able to contain the epidemic soon.

A video of sympathy was sent to BUU by the Broward School of Engineering in Israel, in which the President of the school, Professor Al-Mahshak, and the Director of the International Office, Dr. Samuel Gazit, sent their heartfelt greetings to the staff and students of BUU. They also looked forward to the early resumption of exchange activities.

Xu Xingqing, the President of the Chinese Culture University, sent a letter of sympathy to BUU, expressing his hope that the two universities would work together to overcome the difficulties and that exchanges would resume after the epidemic is over.

In addition, Moscow Pedagogical State University in Russia, University of the West of Scotland in the UK, Swansea University in the UK, Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain, Budapest Business School in Hungary, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, and Chaoyang University of Technology of Taiwan, China all sent their messages of sympathy. They were confident that China would overcome all difficulties and believed that Chinese people’s lives would improve with the return of spring. They hoped to join hands with the students and faculty of BUU to tide over the difficulties and to support Wuhan and China.

Our foreign teachers also sent their best wishes via video. Russian teacher Klavdia Oryshich, American teacher Kristen Elaine Thompson, Swedish teacher John Thomas Karlsson and Cuban teacher Lopez Gonzalez Liuban expressed their gratitude to BUU for the care they have received, and sent their best wishes to the students and teachers at the university. They expressed their support and encouragement for China, and hoped that they could work together with China to fight against the epidemic and that everyone’s life would return to normal soon.
